Multimorbidity in patients undergoing day surgery: a retrospective cohort study

This is a letter to the British Journal of Anaesthesia examining the prevalence of multimorbidity in adult patients undergoing day surgery in Lothian, Scotland. The examined outcomes were hospital admissions and emergency department attendances in 30 days after the surgery, which increased for patients with multimorbidity. The results show that multimorbidity is both common among day surgery patients and associated with increased risk of subsequent hospital admission, suggesting those patients have different post-operative needs.
